What is Hygge?

What is Hygge? “Hoo-gah” Definition: a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.

Hygge can’t be summarized in a word or even a sentence. It’s a feeling. It’s when you rest your body, mind, and spirit. Enjoying the simple things. A sanctuary of coziness. It’s sitting on your couch sipping hot tea in front of a fire. Eating homemade treats with friends in your kitchen. Reading a book in cozy sweatpants while listening to the rain outside. Instead of the usual daily rush, hygge life teaches us to slow down and enjoy each precious moment.

Here are 5 ways you can incorporate a hygge lifestyle:

1. Invite hygge into your home. 🏠 Adding cozy areas to your space using warm lighting, fluffy pillows and rugs, and greenery will create a peaceful space for you and your family.

2. Slow down. 😌 Hygge is like the period at the end of each sentence. Really appreciate that quality moment in time. No multi tasking. No phones, tv or other distractions. Just be.

3. Spend quality time with friends and family. 👥 Cozy nites in playing games, wholesome conversation, eating around a table, and togetherness is the ultimate contentment.

4. Loungewear. 🧘🏽‍♀️Hygge life is all about the fabrics that make you feel like you’re still in bed. That “I don’t want to move from this spot” comfort. That “10 more minutes”. Throw on that favorite t-shirt you probably should have gotten rid of 5 years ago, fluffy socks or slippers (or go barefoot) and throw your hair up in a messy bun, ladies. (Man bun for dudes).

5. Scent it up. 🕯Your sense of smell is the strongest of the senses linked to memory. Which scents bring you the most happiness? Light a few candles, bake something yummy, diffuse your favorite aromatherapy (be careful of certain oils with pets). Our olfactory system is located in the same part of our brain that effects emotions, memory, and creativity. It’s science.
